HOW TO CHOOSE A ROOFER
- Seek an experienced and established roofer in accordance with Texas state law
- Ask for references to include contractors, suppliers, and completed projects
- Ask to see certificates of liability insurance which are in force during the time of your project
- Require a detailed, written estimate of the total price and terms of payment
- Require a detailed, written estimate with the scope of work specified to include installation procedures
- Require metal product information from the metal manufacturer
- Contact the Better Business Bureau to verify complaints filed against the roofer you are considering
- Ask to visit completed projects in your local area
ROOFING TERMINOLOGY Deck/Sheathing - the surface, usually plywood or oriented strand board to which roof coverings and felt paper are applied. Dormer - a small structure projecting from a sloped roof usually a window. Drip Edge - L shaped metal strip installed along roof edge to allow water to drip clear of the deck, eaves, and siding. Eave - the horizontal lower of edge of a sloped roof where it extends past the outer wall. Fascia - a flat band or face located just below the eave. Felt paper - used as a secondary layer of protection over the roof deck, once installed over the roof deck, the metal panels can then be installed. Flashing - metal used to prevent water penetration around any intersection or projection in the roof such as chimneys, vent pipes, and valleys. Oriented strand board - roof deck panels made of narrow bits of wood held together with resin glue and often substituted for plywood sheets. Penetrations - vents, pipes, stacks, chimneys, or anything that penetrates up through the roof. Rake - the incline edge of a roof over a wall. Ridge - The top edge of two intersecting sloping roof structures. Slope - a roof's incline measured by rise in inches for every 12 inches of horizontal run. A roof with a 4-in-12 slope rises four inches for every foot. Square - one hundred square feet (10 ft x 10 ft), the most common measurement for roof surfaces. Valley - the angle formed at the intersection of two sloping roof surfaces.
